Here at Edge Pharma, we were very pleased to learn of the success of the most recent Haiti Eye Mission trip to Pignon, Haiti. Edge donates ophthalmic medications for this great cause. Led by Dr. Lance Bergstrom of Fargo, ND, this year’s team provided 1,400 eye exams and 335 surgeries, all in one week in May. Hundreds of eyeglasses were distributed, and $2 million worth of glaucoma drops dispensed. Glaucoma affects 25% of the population in Haiti.

Pignon is one of the most impoverished communities in the island nation, and healthcare access is an ongoing challenge, says Kristin Follman, director of the nonprofit organization. Some patients walk miles and sleep outside the clinic, waiting their turn to be seen. No one is turned away.

Here are a few of this year’s success stories, shared in the Haiti Eye Mission newsletter:

  • An 11-year-old boy who was blind with cataracts, can now see and go to school for the first time in his life
  • A young woman with special needs can see for the first time in 17 years and now can feed herself and walk without assistance
  • A young father and his two teenage sons were diagnosed with glaucoma early and received a year’s worth of sight-saving glaucoma drops
